Zemlja lijepih osmjeha i rajskih plaža! A land of beautiful smiles and paradise beaches! Thailand

Naše turističke agencije prepune su aranžmana za Tajland pa ako više volite da drugi organiziraju put za vas onda toplo preporučujem. Mi smo se odlučile za vlastiti aranžman jer smo htjele tjedan dana provesti na yoga retreat-u baš u ovoj tropskoj zemlji, a ostale smo i tri dana duže kako bi posjetile Phi Phi otoke gdje smo se samo sunčale i kupale. Pa krenimo redom;

Broj stanovnika: 69,04 milijuna
Religija: Budizam
Valuta: Tajlandski baht (50 bahta - 11 kuna)
Vremenska razlika u odnosu na Hrvatsku: 6 sati
Najbolje vrijeme za posjet: od 11. - 4. mjeseca
Are you a person who loves to read or (even better) experience a different way of life, try new dishes, listen about other religions, experience something unusual, etc....? In this case, you need to 'overtake' the 13-hour flight and land in Thailand because this country will offer you all that and much more!!
Many Croats have prejudices about this (and not just this) country. When I said I was going to Thailand people usually commented something like 'what am I going to do there', 'it's expensive', 'someone's going to steal your organs', 'You have to get vaccinated because there's a lot of illness'.... etc., those people have barely made it to our shores. Of course, there are those who say they have visited Thailand several times already and that I will have an amazing time there.
The following is very important to emphasize; Thailand is much more developed in some aspects than Croatia and also in tourism. Prior to 2000, Thailand has indeed been underdeveloped for our terms and quite cheap but in the last 20. years the country has literally flourished, has one of the highest rates of economic growth in the world, the seventh lowest unemployment rate and only 10% of the population lives below the poverty line, while in Croatia this percentage is at 26!
Our tourist agencies are overcrowded with arrangements for Thailand so if you prefer that others organize a path for you then I highly recommend it. We decided for our own arrangement because we wanted to spend a week at a yoga retreat right in this tropical country, and we stayed three days longer to visit the Phi Phi Islands where we just sunbathed and swam in the ocean. So, let's start in the order;

Since I am a yoga instructor and take yoga classes, I also organize yoga retreats in Croatia with my friend Maya, business associate and companion on this trip. We wanted to go to a yoga retreat where someone would pamper us for a change, but again we did not want to leave out the adventurous and exploratory part of the way. Browsing thorough many offers, one offer caught our eye and although we could find one that was much cheaper, we did not want anything other because the program offered more than we could have imagined.
In one word the program is - brutal!!
Sletjele smo na Phuket krajem 10. mjeseca 2019. Odradile smo birokratski dio ulaska u zemlju.
We landed in Phuket at the end of November 2019. We filled out the bureaucratic part of entering the country. There was a driver waiting outside the airport to drive us to our hotel an hour away. Our first impression was an absolute pleasant surprise. They are extremely organized and polite. Although we were still operating on our home time (around 5am), tired and crushed from the flight, here it was already passed 10 am, sultry and sunny, looking out the window of the van we absorbed everything we could see while driving. At one point, the van veered off the main road and climbed up a not-so-small hillside, and we arrived at the hotel. Here they greeted us politely, with a smile and a refreshing welcome drink. At the reception we checked in and filled out a detailed application for the programs they were offering, and we finally entered the room.
Our room was located on the top floor overlooking the ocean, beautiful, clean, authentic, full of interesting Thai details with a nice bathroom full of hygienic necessities.
After a brief recess and attempted rapid adaptation we went to our first yoga class. The teacher was a nice Puerto Rican who didn't spare us. Our bodies were grateful for the yoga class and now they (bodies) were hungry. We were looking forward to some decent food to forget the one we ate on the plane. At the entrance we were greeted again by beautiful and polite smiles. The food here was awesome!! The option for vegans and vegetarians were plenty to spare, the fine freshly squeezed juices were fantastic, and the portions were plentiful.
After dinner, we went for our first massage at a massage studio down town. Our hotel driver drove us and picked us up when we were done. The massage was exactly what we needed because 13+ hours of flight time in economy seat is not the most enjoyable experience. They really know how to do their jobs. Although some of them work more than 12 hours a day, they greeted us with a smile, placed us comfortably and offered us a drink. After an hour and a half massage, the only thing we lacked was a bed and some deep sleep.
Our program was quite overfilled with activities and I know, we had it coming, but we still wanted to experience as much as possible in this short time we had here. Of course, on the sixth, seventh day we got tired in every sense of the word, but it paid off.
Day 2
After morning yoga and breakfast, we had a full day trip around Phuket and beyond. They took us to a national park where we walked in the jungle, literally. The sparring and the humidity are quite tiring and besides, I was worried about seeing snakes. Our fantastic tour guide Nim convinced us by saying it was the end of the rainy season and that the snakes had not come out of their hiding places yet. Hearing this, we totally relaxed. Our group consisted of people from all over the world, we quickly became friends and enjoyed it. The best part of the trail is the waterfall where we all found refreshment from the large sparse.
After trekking in the jungle, we went kayaking. The river had a very low water level, so we had to get out of the kayak several times and drag it into deeper water. Anyway, it was a fun experience.
After the kayak came the best part; A resort and a spa with a hot and cold pool. The hot pool is about 50-60 degrees, it is recommended to stay in it for at least 5 min followed by a cold pool about 10 degrees stay in it for about 1 min and thus repeat at least 3 times.
Getting into the hot pool seemed like an impossible mission, but little by little we all made it. It's little to say that this resort is wonderful, besides these two pools there was a large pool of mild temperature, the entire complex is located on the beach and the garden is decorated phenomenally, full of tropical flowers and trees, and wonderful details like wooden elephants, nice pathways, waterslides and a bar located in the pool.
While we were swimming in the hot pool, it started to rain. It is important to emphasize that the rain here is not like back home where everything immediately cools down. Here is hot, steamy and a lot of moisture outside, so the water condenses during the day and it often rains in the evening, but the rain is warm and a little bit refreshing. Now I understand why the rain doesn't bother them at all because it didn't bother us either, quite the contrary, it was extremely fun and unforgettable experience.

Dan 3
Day 3
This day was the one we were looking forward to weeks before we came to Thailand. We had a full-day trip to the elephant shelter. For 1500 Thai baht which is approximately 330 kn we received the following; The driver with the van was waiting for us outside our hotel at the appointed time. We picked up two more women from another hotel. With a smile, the driver told us '1 hour' (driving). Arriving at the large shelter office we were greeted by a likeable worker who directed us to the reception, there we got our number and were welcomed to the waiting room with air conditioning and WiFi, and after about 5 minutes later our car arrived.
This is not a classic car for five people, but a custom cargo car with benches for sitting and tarpaulin for shade and rain. We boarded with some other people and headed for the shelter. Only then did we realize that the shelter was far off the road and housed in the woods/jungle.
We were driven for 15 or 20 minutes by a gravel road when we finally had arrived at the shelter. It looked even better than the pictures.
We got out of the car, they escorted us to the room where we had to chang. We got clean socks and boots and used gestures to show us a nice room to settle, where guests gather, give presentations, serve food and drink. All rooms were outdoors, perfectly blending with nature, full of flowers and details, canopies made of wood and bamboo. Whichever way you look, you see shelter and elephants.
They offered us juice, water, coffee and fruit, as well as cold towels. The film lasted about 10 minutes in which the actual state, the goal and the way they work in this shelter was explained. The film was more emotional than even though it could be. I've heard about how they treat elephants, how some people exploit them for industry and tourism, how they're tortured, beaten, starved to death, and they call it dressage, but after this film I was surprised by human stupidity.
The aim of this shelter is to redeem the tortured elephants, to treat them, to feed the starving and the general provision of care, but also to the conditions of life as similar as possible to natural, free life.
They currently have nine elephants in the shelter, each elephant has its own keeper. Some elephants are afraid of humans because they have been tortured so much that they have become distrustful, some are badly injured, and some are extremely approachable and enjoying their new life.
They divided us into four groups by color, each group got their own guide and we went on a tour. The first stop was feeding the elephants. Elephants adore bananas, bamboo, watermelons, cucumbers. some of these are heavy and weigh over 4 tons and eat raw fruits and vegetables.
The elephant is behind the fence, and this is the only time a person can get close to it and touch it. Otherwise, as instructed, you can't get any closer than 20 feet.

U sklopu skloništa imaju i suvenirnicu gdje također sav novac odlazi u sklonište. Nismo baš štedjele i nakupovale smo puno toga.
The guide took us through the entire shelter. He introduced us to all nine elephants, we heard their stories and how they got here, they were mostly funded by tickets and they planned to plant their own food. The shelter is quite large, and through it a small river passes, there are small lakes where elephants adore bathing. It was a nice but also terribly sultry and hot day, I really don't know what it's like here in the summer.
We made a circle around the shelter and went back to the gathering room where we were greeted with a rather plentiful vegetarian lunch but also a large selection of drinks. As part of the shelter they also have a souvenir shop where all the money goes to the shelter. We didn't really save up and we've accumulated a lot of things.
A very sad information carved into my mind, In 1900. Thailand was the home of 100,000 elephants. Today there are only 8,000 of them living in the wild and half are still being exploited for tourism or industry. There's more and more of these beautiful shelters. Be careful where you give your money. Riding elephants or watching a show with them is not worth it if you know they live in chains and are tortured. By visiting these shelters, you can also take a beautiful picture with an elephant and get a beautiful, honest smile from this amazing animal and know that the money has gone into good hands. Our transport was also arranged to take us back to the office and from where we were returned to the hotel by the same driver.
Now tell me, is 330 kn a lot for all this?!
Full of impressions it was time for the beach.
I have already mentioned our driver at the hotel. As part of the offer we had available transportation to the city or beach every day from 9:00 in the morning to 23.00 in the evening. The customized car with the trailer leaves every full hour from the hotel, there are eight stations. If we want to go somewhere at the reception we would write down the number of the station we wanted to go to, the time of departure, the number of the station and exact time the driver should pick us up. When they first explained it to us we were in such a positive shock. We don't have to worry about taxis at all or pay dearly for their services. This is so brilliantly organized that we're just thrilled. So, the two of us wrote the station number where we wanted to go and in less than 10 minutes we were on the beach.
The first honest encounter with the beach was incredible. It looks huge and the same as in the pictures, it had tourists but thank God not too many. Swimming in the ocean is a different experience than swimming in our sea. The waves are much bigger, and the ocean is incredibly warm. Beware of the sun here, you can burn in no time, just like us, you can get sunburned. We were playing in that sand with so much happiness that we forgot about the intensity of the sun.

Dan 4
Bile smo presretne.
Day 4
And this day too began with a morning yoga and a rich and fine breakfast. We were ready for another fantastic trip. The first stop was a visit to a Buddhist temple. A simple and secluded building with a large meditation room, perched on a hill in the jungle. Since we got here quite early, we were the only guests. Our tour guide briefly referred us to the life of the monk and guided us through a meditation. We thanked her very much and moved on with our trip. Just five minutes from the temple, the trail to the jungle began.
Although we were already walking through the jungle in the north of Phuket, this one was much closer to us and definitely wilder. There were no nice beaten paths here and the terrain was quite challenging with a lot of climbs and steep descents. A hot day and humidity just made it harder for us to walk. Our little group of five women was fantastic. We turned it all over to banter and a huge amount of laughter, time flew by. At the end of the trail they greeted us with cold coconut and fresh fruit, we were overjoyed.
The next activity was zip-line. In Croatia we had already tried a zip-line, so we knew what was in store for us, but when we got there we realized that this is not just a regular zip-line this is what we called a military camp. A fantastic and huge park in the great Forest where they built bridges, obstacles, various and quite challenging trails. After short training and watching the video we were ready, or so we thought.
Here you could spend literally all day, it was very fun but also physically exhausting. I've said a few times how hot the day was and coming back from the jungle I think had left us literally wet with sweat. If you're an adrenaline junkie, then this is an indispensable stop for you.
Challenging, fun, adrenaline as you need it.
Pogotovo jer sam čitala o njenim benefitima.
Ako ništa ne znate o akupunkturi evo kratko par informacija;
Vrh.
We don't even know how many hours we had spent at Xtreme Adventure Park but we knew we were exhausted and hungry. Our tour guide and driver took us to a beautiful restaurant that grows its salad and spices. It was impressive to go into a restaurant because first we had to go through the greenhouse to get into the restaurant. I don't even have to mention that our lunch was even more delicious. With a retelling of our adventure today, laughter and banter, the time had come to return to the hotel.
Day 5
We woke up with our muscles sore. Just when you think you're in shape and you can physically pull it off it still turns out it's not exactly like that. We definitely felt general fatigue, but regardless of our current condition, we went for morning yoga that relaxed us and eased the pain. After another hearty breakfast, we headed to the medical center for acupuncture. I had never been to an acupuncture and I was really looking forward to a new experience. Especially since I'd read about it’s benefits.
If you don't know anything about acupuncture, here's a few information:
It is an ancient Chinese method of treatment using needles that stick to specific points on the skin. The first written traces exist from 2800 BC in the Yellow River Valley. The author of the book Huang -Di Nei - Jing, which is considered the oldest medical work in the world. Traditional Chinese medicine, considers that the life energy of Qi passes through the body over 14 meridians and 360 points. These pathways help regulate Yin and Yang, which are two opposing forces that keep the body in balance. The disease is thought to be created because of stagnation or blockage of Qi and the acupuncture pins establish normal energy flow.
We came to the medical center where they sent us to a smaller six-bed room. On one bed a woman was already laying while a doctor and a nurse stood next to her and gently and concentratedly stabbed her with small needles. The doctor didn't even look at us, he was just doing his job and the nurse greeted us just by nodding her head and showing us to lie on the beds. The five of us looked at each other, laid on the bed and waited for our turn. The sight of a woman whose back was full of needles woke up the adrenaline inside me. I can't say I'm afraid of needles, but it's not like I'm a big fan of it.
After five minutes, the doctor was done with her and I was next in line. He just asked me if I had any major pain in my body, when I said I didn't, he said to just relax, and he started stabbing me with needles; in the neck, shoulders, several in the arms and hands but mostly along the spine and lumbar part. I can't say it was the best experience of my life because a needle sting doesn't hurt very much but you definitely feel a slight unpleasant pain all over the place. I tried to relax as much as possible and believe me that half an hour lasted a very long time, when he came again to take off the needles I was happy.
For a good hour after the treatment I was stunned, I couldn't quite explain my condition and so couldn’t the other girls. We all agreed that this was a strange feeling. In the hope that our meridians had at least a little balance we went to the beach and later to the market for shopping. The day ended with the best possible full-body massage, it was the best massage of my life!

Dan 6
Bile smo ponosne jer smo nekoliko položaja savladale i imamo baš lijepe slike.
Day 6
Even though we didn't have a physically difficult day yesterday, it was still hard for us to get out of bed. We didn't want to miss our program, so we somehow made it to the morning yoga class. And thank God we did because yoga energized and excited us.
After breakfast, we had a great class that we always wanted to try out, it was ariel yoga or floating yoga on silk. The instructor was a likeable Thai woman who explained positions, procedures and small tricks. This wasn’t as easy as it looked at all and I already had the feeling that tomorrow my hands are going to kill me, yet ariel yoga was extremely fun and of course useful for our body and deepening yoga practice. We were proud because we've mastered a few positions and we've got some really nice pictures.
Another adventure followed, which we were very much looking forward to when we saw it in the program that we didn't want to miss the opportunity. It was surfing, but not surfing in the ocean, of course, but surfing in a pool specialized in just that. The surf house, as the place is called, is located right on the beach and not only a swimming pool for surfing, but also a café with something to eat.
They play loud commercial music, they serve cocktails, and you can still watch the crew embarrass themselves on the board. Today was our turn to be embarrassed or to be honest, I was just embarrassing myself, Maya wasn't doing too bad, but I sure was.
It's not easy to maintain a balance on the board at all and master the surfing technique and all that in front of the audience that's having the most fun when someone falls off the board, which I've done at least 10 times. It's extremely fun, great for outings where you can enjoy fresh and cold cocktails and smile like never before. Recommend it.
Day 7
Finally came the day when our schedule was slower but unfortunately this was our last day at this hotel. I'm not going to lie to you, as I've said before, the weather difference, the high humidity, the tropical climate and the overcrowded schedule had overwhelmed us. If I had to go through it all again, I definitely would, and it's really worth it. When you travel so far you want to make the most of every minute and consume the last atom of energy if you have. We kept telling each other we were going to sleep on the plane.
Like every day so far, we started with the morning yoga and were overjoyed that yin yoga was on the schedule. After a nice breakfast, we decided to spend the day in the hotel relaxing by the pool, sunbathing, swimming and enjoying freshly squeezed juices. It was interesting that we had been here a week and we had only just found the time to throw ourselves in the pool. It wasn't worth it for us to go down to the beach because we had an appointment for a reiki. Maya was at 12:00 and I was at 13:00.
Reiki is another thing we had done there the first time. I know what you're thinking, we had tried so much the first time, even though some things are available to us at home yet only on our travels do we have more will and enthusiasm to try or do something. It's certainly because of that freedom and the ease we feel, so if that's the case then we should make the most of it.
I was familiar with reiki, but I had never been to a treatment when I saw this in the program, so I thought I should do it.
If you don't know anything about reiki, here's a few information:
Reiki is a Japanese word complex of two words - rei (universal divine energy) and ki (your own vital energy). Reiki is a universal vital energy that does not know limitations and is available to all. Dr. Mikao Usui founder of Reiki as a natural way of healing itself and others. When you open a channel to receive life energy, you have a lifetime left. Reiki is not a religion, an ideology or a conditioned way of life. It is a natural, unconditional way of conducting universal life energy that establishes the energy balance of the body and thus supports classical forms of treatment and acts preventively as a method of preserving health. The method of receiving reiki is very simple, the person who wants to receive the treatment simply settles in a comfortable position, whether lying down or sitting. Reiki is based on laying hands on certain parts of the body, each part we treat for a few minutes. The complete treatment takes about an hour, and a person can feel her body vibrating or can feel the heat on the parts of the body that are being treated.
When I finally got my turn, I was greeted by a beautiful woman in her 50s with an ear-to-ear smile. She asked me a few questions like where I'm from, how I like it here and stuff like that. We entered a small but sweet, intimate room where he works with clients. I sat on the bed and she briefly told me what this was all going to look like. I lay down on the bed and I completely relaxed. First, she placed a few crystals around my entire body and started laying her hands on my head and slowly descended to my feet.
The treatment was pleasant and I personally had not felt anything special other than a little heat in some parts of the body. After an hour it was over. She passed on all the information she received during the treatment, and that's it. We talked a bit more and said goodbye. Of course, I'm not going to write you what she told me here because it's personal, but if you're attracted to this at all, find a reiki master nearby and go for treatment because you can get a lot.
Dan 8,9 i 10
Day 8,9,10
We couldn't believe our week flew so fast and at the same time it lasted forever. We felt a slight sadness that we had to say goodbye to our dear people and leave the hotel. Outside the hotel, there was a van that transported us to the ferry port, and from there we boarded our catamaran to the Phi Phi Islands. If you do not want to purchase the ticket yourself, the hotel will do it for you. Our hotel had booked us the carrier to the ferry port, the return ticket for the boat and transport to the airport. We were stunned, and it was really fascinating to watch the way this worked so well with them.
Catamaran takes 2 hours from Phuket to reach Phi Phi Island. At the entrance on the island we paid approximately 5 kn for maintaining the cleanliness of the island and just after the entrance stood the skippers with hotel signs. Our driver put our suitcases in an authentic boat with a definitely authentic engine and mode of driving, we waited for the other passengers and headed out to our resort which is reachable only by boat. They said you can go over the hill by foot but there's no road built. There's basically no road on PhiPhi Island.

We drove about half an hour to our resort. The view said it all. It was so unrealistically beautiful that I'm not at all surprised that the Phi Phi Islands are so popular. The view from the sea to our resort is wonderful. We were too excited to be here that that morning grief we felt disappeared at the first glimpse of the hotel located on the beach, the small bungalows blended perfectly with tropical forest and beautiful flowers. If you want a vacation in every sense of the word, then this is the place for you. In addition to the houses there is a restaurant and a small shop, you have a beach, a view, a warm ocean and fine food. That was it, we were in heaven.

Here not only the island was beautiful, but the hosts were also more accommodating and dear. We were greeted as princesses with welcome drinks, smiles and everything it takes to make a guest feel beautiful.
Our cottage was a little up the hill, which resulted in us having an even nicer view. Since the season was only at the beginning there were not many guests which suited us completely. The beach was literally empty, someone was swimming and sunbathing here and there, but we had a feeling we were alone. The other day we paid for a trip to the extremely popular Maya beach located on the small islet of Ko Phi Phi Leh. I think the birds on the branches already know that the popular movie „The Beach“from 2000. was shot here, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. who made these islands famous.
Our boat driver told us that in the time before the movie came out there were very few people here and after it came out the big rush started.Even the parties were held at Maya beach for a year or two, but they banned them. The rubbish and noise left behind by tourists was unbearable, so in 2018. they closed the beach and can now be approached at 100 m and that's it.

Malo kasnije smo stali u drugu uvalu gdje smo ronili s maskom.
The island is very small, it can be visited in half an hour. We stopped in a beautiful location within the island where we swam and enjoyed the beautiful view and turquoise water. A little while later, we stopped at another bay where we were diving with a mask. The view of the tropical seabed is beautiful. Beautiful fish of literally all colors and shapes swam around the reef and did not pay any attention to us swimmers. The third stop was Maya beach (pictured above) which we could only see from afar and the fourth stop was the monkey beach.
On this beach there were literally live monkeys, of course not only on the beach because of a rock full of trees towered over the beach which is the perfect home for little monkeys. I've been able to take a picture with one monkey, but I honestly don't like the tourists having access to this beach, I find it disturbing. The beach was full of boats and tourists, I can't even imagine what this is like in the high season. I hope this beach will also be closed as Maya beach.
These three days had really been like heaven. Phi Phi Islands are very popular but if you want to enjoy it fully then I recommend you come out of high season. We realized that our timing was perfect.
Swimming and sunbathing and sipping freshly squeezed juices in a beautiful and peaceful resort is the perfect end to our adventure called Thailand. It's a beautiful country with a lot to offer.
See you again.
